The Department is mandated to train high quality students in a variety of fields in the biochemical and chemical sciences. Our courses are structured to allow blending of theoretical concepts with their applications in a growing scientific world; hence emphasis is therefore placed on the applied as well as theoretical aspects. This is intended to meet the current and future needs of Nigerian society in particular and worldwide at large.
The Department day to day activities are largely managed by HOD, Dr. Abdulkabir O. Oladimeji, who has established a framework of ‘shared management’ in which each academic staff is assigned responsibility for a specific set of administrative tasks in addition to his or her teaching and research responsibilities.
The Dean, Prof. David O. Aworinde, provides strategic guidance for the Department’s broad-ranging goals. Being a young and vibrant department, we are rightly positioned with internationally well-trained 18 academic staff members, 66.7% (12) of whom are PhD holders that are poised to achieve our objectives.
We also have 10 Technical staff members, and 50% (5) of them are females. It is pertinent to note that we offer courses leading to B.Sc. Degree programmes in Biochemistry and Industrial Chemistry as well as servicing other Science-based schools including Agriculture and Engineering. This Department commands the respect of the entire School and the University at large due to its strong traditions of academic excellence, diligence and dedication to work.
ALUMNI
Many of our alumni have distinguished themselves in their various fields of endeavor, in academia, business, industry and government.
ONGOING RESEARCH
The Department is mandated to train high quality students in a variety of fields in the chemical and biochemical sciences. In addition to teaching and conducting basic research, the scientists at the Department have often worked on applied projects that could lead to the commercialization of products and services such as phytopesticides, drug discovery via phytochemicals etc. Our research activities focus largely on exploration of new methodologies for drug development from the Earth’s flora to address basic human needs and finding lasting solution to various environmental pollutions experienced in the state. These are in tandem with some of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to establish good health and well-being.
