OAUSTECH Exams: Invigilators Tasked on Regulation Compliance, Active Monitoring

    • July 09, 2026

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Research, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Nigeria, Prof. Foluso Adetuyi, has tasked the institution's invigilators to always remain vigilant while invigilating examinations to prevent students from perpetrating any form of malpractice.

Prof. Adetuyi gave the charge while delivering a lecture titled: "University Examination Regulations and Invigilation: Best Practices for Academic and Technical Staff" during a colloquium organized by the University Taskforce Committee on Examinations held at the Main Campus of the University on Thursday, 18th June, 2026.

According to him, the primary duty of an invigilator is to actively, vigilantly and continuously monitor the students, moving around the classroom/hall strategically to observe from different angles, and maintaining constant visual contact to deter and detect any examination malpractice.

"Your tasks include watching for unusual behaviour, ensuring silence is fully maintained and that students follow all the examination regulations. You should not engage in other tasks like reading, marking, or using electronic devices, busy making phone calls or chatting with other invigilators during the examination period. Therefore, your full and undistracted attention must be on the examination."

"Ensure the examination papers and answer scripts are secured at all times, seek clarifications, enforce University rules on late arrival to the examination hall, give timed warnings to students by reminding them of minutes remaining at intervals without short-changing their time, promptly report any suspected cases of academic misconduct or other complex issues to senior invigilator or exam officer and promptly fill properly signed examination malpractice form for any student caught cheating with evidence intact and ensure proper, matured and professional handling of situations and incidents", Prof. Adetuyi forewarned.

Speaking further, he said examination is not to witch hunt students, but to ensure fairness and equal opportunity, maintain academic standards and credibility, define clear eligibility and conditions for assessment, guide administrative and logistical conduct, protect the rights of students, address and remedy irregularities, act as a deterrent against malpractices and ensure data integrity and secure records among others.

The DVC posited that examination invigilators must arrive examination hall punctually, check in students thoroughly, announce duration and other rules and instructions clearly, and cautioned against the consequences of non compliance with examination regulations by the invigilators, which he stressed may lead to encouragement of student misconduct, loss of invigilator's professional integrity, damaging of institutional reputation and warranting sanctions.

He maintained that refusal to invigilate when assigned is consequential. Adding that any invigilator found guilty of aiding, abetting or actively participating in examination malpractice is liable to a jail term without the option of a fine.

Speaking in the same vein, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration and Development, Prof. Dipo Akomolafe in his lecture titled "Best Practices in Examination Invigilation and Administration: Professional Conduct and Accountability ", advised invigilators to get the regulations right and always do things right to avoid any form of infringement and indictment with regards to examination Invigilation and accountability.

Prof. Akomolafe, represented by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Daniel Adekeye emphasized that examinations are the most visible measure of academic integrity and that how the invigilation and the administration are done directly affect the credibility of certificates, institutions and the education system.

In view of these, professional conduct by the invigilators and accountability mechanism adopted by the academic institutions are the two critical pillars to ensure best practices and credible examinations. Therefore, the role of the invigilator is a continuum that spans across the before, during and after of the examination process.

He submitted that effectiveness of examination Invigilation will be influenced majorly by institutional policies viz students registration policy, staff welfarism and support system, students identification practice, consistent examination schedule, population/hall size ratio and availability of facilities such as electricity, public address system, computers and well ventilated halls among others.

He advised invigilators to always be punctual, dress modestly, avoid impartiality, get familiar with regulations, give clear instructions, avoid all kinds of distractions during invigilation, sign relevant forms/register, make proper documentations, maintain transparency in the custody of question papers and answer scripts, ensure prompt reporting of developments to the right quarter and always uphold the lofty ethics of academic profession.

In her welcome address, the Chairperson, Taskforce Committee on Examination, Prof. Aderonke Ikuomola stated that the objective of the colloquium is to provide an avenue for refreshing participants' knowledge of the University's examination regulations, strengthening compliance with established procedures, promoting professionalism, accountability and fostering a culture of academic integrity in the University.

She stated further that it also provides an opportunity to discuss emerging challenges in examination administration and collectively explore practical situations that will further enhance the quality and credibility of the institution's examination system.

"On behalf of the Taskforce Committee on Examination, I express our profound appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Temi Ologunorisa for his unwavering commitment to the maintenance of academic standards and for initiatives aimed at strengthening examination administration in the University", Prof. Ikuomola remarked.
