    Department of Physical Sciences

    BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Department of Physical Sciences of Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa was established in 2011 as one of the pioneer departments of the University. The department has excellent scientific pedigree, and direction arising from the quality of the Department's founding staff.

The Department is dedicated to providing the highest quality of undergraduate and postgraduate education/training and skills in Physics and Geophysics.

The Department offers B. Tech. degree programmes in Physics and Geophysics, and is currently staffed with an array of highly experienced academics and professionals, in addition to other young upcoming talented stars at varying stages of the academic/professional ladder.

HISTORY OF THE PHYSICAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT

The Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH) was registered by National Universities Commission (NUC), in the year 2010. During the first academic session (2010/2011), five students were offered admissions to study Physics. In the second academic session (2011/2012), sixteen students were enrolled to study Physics, while twenty students were offered admission to study Physics in the third academic session (2012/2013).  As at the end of 2016/2017 academic session, the Department has produced three sets of graduates, and currently has well over three hundred and fifty students in the programmes of the Department.

At the beginning of the programme in the first session (2010/2011), Dr. Mrs. Fasunwon and Dr. Gilbert A. Ibitola taught and examined Physics courses for 100 level students. The first acting Head of Department Dr. G.A. Ibitola, was officially appointed in January 2012. Mr. J.O. Aderibigbe has been handling the Physics and Geophysics laboratory experiments since 2011 in collaboration with lecturers. Dr. Isaac O. Olaniyan joined the Department in 2012 as pioneer staff of Geophysics. Subsequently, Dr. O.S. Hammed and Dr. O.A. Alagbe were also employed into the Physics programme, in addition to complementary efforts by Dr. J.S. Ojo, Dr. K.O. Ogunjobi, Dr. K.D. Adedayo from Federal University of Technology, Akure and Dr. E.O. Falayi from TASUED, who supported the pioneering efforts as adjunct lecturers in Physics. Mr. O.Ajanaku and Mr. B.B. Fabeku were redeployed from technologist cadre to academic cadre as Assistant Lecturers, while Prof. S.S. Oluyamo (FUTA) was also employed as adjunct Professor of Physics. Today, more younger, vibrant and resourceful academic and technical staff have joined the cream of academics in the Department.

The Physics programme is a five-year degree programme. The Department of Physical Sciences currently has seven academic staff members who are either Ph.D degree holders, or are currently at different levels of completing their Ph.D programmes. Furthermore, the department currently has seven technical staff members. In addition, the department has one large general Physics/Geophysics laboratory and one optical darkroom. Academic year work so far in the department goes thus: In the first year, the students take courses in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, General Studies and Computer Studies, so that they can acquire a very broad introductory knowledge.

They are then exposed to basic experimental techniques in these subjects. During the second and third years of study, the students - in addition to taking Physics courses - are exposed to basic computational, programming and entrepreneurship courses to prepare them for higher courses and their SIWES training programmes. The intention is to hone and direct their skills towards industrial developments during this period. There is also a further development of their practical skills to enhance the right work and study ethics.

In the fourth year of study, the students are to be put through workings or processes in the industrial sector as seen in the courses taken in relation to ensuring that they are well-prepared for the SIWES programmes.  During the final year of study, the students take advanced courses in Physics, coupled with the implementation of a project each in Physics. Thus, summarily speaking, it can be vividly seen that our degree programmes instill and inject into our graduates academic and professional competence, discipline, very sound moral and socio-cultural values.
