    AREAS OF OPERATION

    7. Allocation of space for offices and other uses within the University.
    8. Custodian of University Master plan and advising on Developmental matters.

    Vice-Chancellor’s Main Office

    The Staff of the Vice-Chancellor’s main office provides general assistance to the Vice-Chancellor.

    The office is currently under the supervision of a Principal Assistant Registrar and assisted by a Senior Assistant Registrar (Legal). The Principal Assistant Registrar being the H.O.D, Vice-Chancellor’s main office is responsible for the following:

    1. Responsible for all secretarial arrangements for non-statutory meetings involving the Vice-Chancellor;
    2. Organisation and supervision of the secretarial services of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office;
    3. Attending to Vice-Chancellor’s correspondence and related in-flow and out-flow of communications;
    4. Supervising subordinate staff of Vice-Chancellor’s Office;
    5. Serving as Secretary to Principal Officers Meetings;
    6. Preparation of Minutes of Meetings of the Principal Officers;
    7. Preparation of Decision Extract from Principal Officers Meetings and follow-up actions;
    8. Preparation of papers and documents for Management decisions;
    9. Drafting of Vice-Chancellor’s Report to Council Meeting, Mails, and speeches;
    10. Preparing Budget of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office;

    FUNCTIONS OF DIRECTORATE OF ACADEMIC PLANNING

    • Academic Planning Directorate serve as a focal point for academic development in the university
    • Collection and use of data in making projections and advising the university as appropriate
    • To guide and monitor the university’s activities in accordance with the statutory goals, mission and vision of the university.
    • Preparing and revising of long, medium and short term Academic Brief of the University
    • Ensuring compliance with the academic brief and strategic plan of the university
    • Dealing with NUC matters, resource and academic programs planning and accreditation and attending to academic development matters and Quality Assurance.
    • Ensuring that the academic processes in the university are of national and international respected standard through the promotion of quality enhancement practices in the academic programming of the university.
    • Ensuring the adequate provision of a conducive teaching, learning and research environment for staff and students.
    • Determination of adequate staff strength and requirement to guide against any possible excess staffing and its attendant results.
    • Preparation, computerization and publication of data on students’ admission, enrolment projections and determination of Full-Time Equivalent (FTE).
    • Supply of Staff and Students data to NUC when required.
    • Supply of Staff and Student data for University Annual Budgets
    • Preparing, providing and updating all necessary statistics for the University Development Plans, including preparation of Staff and Students statistics for enrolment, projections and Academic Briefs.
    • Carrying out continuous evaluation of the performance of academic programs, rationalization of courses, de-merger/merger of academic units or departments.
    • Collecting, collating and providing required data and unit costs for resource planning and budgetary preparations in the University.
    • Regular liaison and consultation with Deans, Registrar, Bursar, University Librarian, Admissions Officer, Personnel/ Establishment Officer on information and data on Staff and Students for planning purposes.
    • Assisting the Vice-Chancellor in all Accreditation matters and also advising Departments and Faculties of program review and preparation for NUC accreditation visits.
    • Appraisal and processing of requests for affiliation from other tertiary institutions.
    • Attendance and participation at the Conference of Directors of Academic Planning of Nigerian Universities (CODAPNU) meetings and other NUC organized Workshop affecting Academic Planning/Quality Assurance.
    • Serving as Secretariat to the Academic Planning Committee.
    • The directorate liaises with the National Universities Commission, Ministry of Education, TeTfund and other external bodies on behalf of the University and discharges any other duty assigned by the Vice-Chancellor

    B.Sc. Botany

    PROGRAMME PHILOSOPHY

    The biological roles of plants, as the primary producers on which all other consumers depend upon to thrive and the increasing use of plants and plant products in the area of biotechnology to improve human health and the environment, make them an important and indispensable component of the ecosystem. This makes the scientific study of plants to the benefit of humankind inevitable. It is, therefore, crucial and imperative to train and produce graduates that will be able to manage the plants in a sustainable manner, promote plant diversity and modification, ensure plant conservation and encourage technology transfer. These are global mandates on plant genetic resources which this programme also intend to pursue.

    In pursuance of these mandates, it is the philosophy of the programme to promote effective teaching, learning and meaningful researches in the best tradition of Botany, to produce graduates who will use their acquired knowledge on plants to solve the world’s social, economic and ecological problems within the context of sustainable development.

    PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

    1. Developing students’ appreciation for plants and plant uses
    2. Familiarizing students with the names, identity and distribution of plants.
    3. Exposing students to practical Botany techniques that will enhance their quick understanding of the course.
    4. Acquainting students with the medicinal plant and medicinal uses of plants and general economic importance of plants.
    5. Building research culture into students to make them become plant scientists that will be able to manipulate plant genomes for beneficial purposes through Biotechnology.
    6. To organize training workshops on conservation of plant diversity and management of plant resources for sustainable development.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    (a) UTME Admission:

    Candidates seeking admission through Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Examinations must offer the following subjects:  English Language and three other subjects out of Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science and Physics or any other relevant science subject.

    In addition, candidates must have five credit passes at SSCE/NECO/GCE in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics in not more than two sittings.

    (b) Direct Entry Admission:

    Candidates may be admitted into the 200 Level of the programme by direct entry if they have at least two A-Level passes in Biology/Zoology, Chemistry or any other relevant subject in addition to the five credit passes at SSCE/NECO/GCE in the subjects specified for UTME candidates.

    PROGRAMME DURATION

    The normal duration of the programme is four academic sessions for students admitted to 100 level through UTME and three academic sessions for those admitted into 200 level through Direct Entry. Students may take longer than the normal duration to complete the requirements for graduation but will not be allowed to exceed twelve (12) semesters for candidates admitted through UTME and ten (10) semesters for candidates admitted by Direct Entry.

    GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

    To be eligible for the B.Sc. degree in of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, a candidate must

    • pass all prescribed core courses, School and University required courses as well as electives;
    • complete successfully a minimum of 155 units for candidates admitted through UTME and 111 units for candidates admitted through Direct Entry, and obtain a CGPA of not less than 1.0, and

    B.Sc. Microbiology

    PHILOSOPHY

    The Philosophy of the programme is to produce University Graduates who are knowledgeable and adequately skilled and cultured with trained minds in general, while seeking to expose them to all facets of Microbiology with the purpose of self-realization and a sense of the need to contribute to National developments. Problem appreciation in the programme is located in the concrete objective of the Nigerian situation and cultural locale.

    OBJECTIVES

    1. Producing graduates with good B.Sc. Degree in Microbiology
    2. Graduating students who would be able to demonstrate professional competence on all issues concerning the area of Microbiology in which they specialize
    3. Building students’ capacity to fit into the appropriate level of manpower to which their qualification will allow them in various employment opportunities available to Microbiologists
    4. Training students to develop self-confidence in appreciating, handling and solving problems with minimal or no supervision
    5. Producing Microbiologists who can be self-employed and possibly employers of labour
    6. Training students to be able to ease into postgraduate programme without difficulty

    B.Sc. Zoology

    PROGRAMME PHILOSOPHY

    The B.Sc. Zoology is one of the disciplines in the world that deal with scientific study of animals, which includes man and their related sciences.

    The need for man to know the relationships and interactions among animals and between animals and their environments cannot be over emphasized. This knowledge is essential for effective management, improvement and utilization of the animal resources.

    The areas of Zoology include animal anatomy, physiology, histology, taxonomy genetics etc., which cut across all groups of animals (vertebrates and invertebrates) in their different habitats.

    The Zoology programme of the University is designed to fulfil these academic responsibilities by training students in the discipline to become professionals and contribute its rightful share in relieving the shortages of food production, environmental conservation, veterinary and paramedical personnel, competent teachers and research workers in Zoology.

    In addition to producing graduates of Zoology, the programme will service students from other science-based Schools of the University.  

    PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

    1. To produce graduates that can compete with other graduates of Zoology anywhere in the world in knowledge and skill for employments.
    2. To encourage the students to carry out quality researches and developmental activities that will put the University on a high pedestal internationally.
    3. To champion the course of animal production, preservation and conservation and provide services that will have impacts on the University’s immediate communities.
    4. To develop professionalism in the graduates of the programme to become job creators, rather than being job seekers.

    B.Sc. Biochemistry

    PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES OF PROGRAMME

    The disciplines of Science are the foundation of technological development and advancement with attendant contributions to national growth and development. B. Tech degree programme in Biochemistry is structured to train students in biology/chemistry oriented academic environment - specifically, understanding the Chemistry of living organisms and metabolic activities taking place within the system of living organism (Plant and Animals) in relation to revealing its alteration effects as apparent in human physiological disorders and diseases.

    The biochemistry courses are structured to allow assortment of theoretical concepts with their applications in a growing scientific world, growth of chemical industries coupled with the training of professional Biochemists has an enormous influence on human life and paramount in national development

    On these premise, Biochemistry programme would be involved in the following:

    1. Provision of basic education in the science of biochemistry.
    2. Produce graduates who will be sound in basic biochemical principles and techniques also who will possess good character that can be employed in chemical and allied industries, brewery, food and beverage industries, research institutes, academics and self-employed thereby contributing to national development.
    3. Provide centre of excellence in Biochemistry at postgraduate level to provoke academic staff to carry out research and to encourage internationally acclaimed biochemists for collaboration.
    4. Provide adequate services to students and staff from other programmes that require the knowledge of biochemistry.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Candidates should possess GCE, WASC or NECO ‘O’ level result with passes at credit level in at least five subjects which must include English language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology or Agricultural science.
    2. UTME Entrance Requirements: The UTME subjects for candidates seeking admission into Biochemistry degree programme include English language, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
    3. Direct Entry Requirements: The 4 year degree programme is for direct entry candidates who must possess ‘O’ level credits in English language and Mathematics plus at least 2 ‘A’ level HSC passes in the relevant science subjects including Chemistry, Biology and Physics. A good National Diploma from recognized Polytechnics and College of Technology with a minimum of Upper Credit at National Diploma level along with the GCE, WASC or NECO ‘O’ level requirements for UTME admission.
    4. Transfer of candidate: Students can be allowed to transfer from other programmes into 200 level  of Biochemistry programme if they satisfy the university conditions of transfer and existence of vacancies in biochemistry programme.

    PROGRAMME DURATION

    The duration for the B.Tech Biochemistry shall be four academic sessions for students that entered the University by UTME admission and three academic sessions for those by direct entry admission.

    GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

    To be eligible for the award of B. Tech (Biochemistry), a student must have

    1. Passed all compulsory courses, and minimum units of elective courses
    2. Accumulated a minimum of 180 course units for students admitted through UTME and 136 for students admitted through Direct Entry.
    3. Completed the compulsory 6 month industrial training.
