OAUSTECH VC Implements New Minimum Wage, Pays Arrears, Boosts Staff Morale

    • March 01, 2025

The Vice-Chancellor of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Prof. Temi Emmanuel Ologunorisa, has implemented the new minimum wage for staff, with effect from February 2025.

This move is a significant boost to staff morale, coming after months of agitation by the university's workers for the implementation of the minimum wage award.

The Vice-Chancellor, who has been at the helm of affairs at OAUSTECH since February 2022, has demonstrated his commitment to the welfare of staff, ensuring that they receive their deserved compensation. The implementation of the new minimum wage is expected to improve the standard of living of staff, who have been struggling to make ends meet amidst the current economic challenges.

In addition to implementing the new minimum wage, the Vice-Chancellor has also paid the outstanding arrears owed to staff. This gesture has been hailed as a significant step towards improving staff welfare and boosting morale. Mr. Oluwaseyi Akeremale, a staff member, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "I'm really impressed that the annual increment and promotion arrears has been paid, and that the new minimum is being implemented. It will go a long way in easing my burden." Dr. Rotimi Olorunisola, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), OAUSTECH branch, praised the Vice-Chancellor's move, saying, "This is a welcome development, and we commend the Vice-Chancellor for his efforts. However, we still have some outstanding issues that need to be addressed, and we are sure that the Vice-Chancellor will continue to work with us to resolve them."

Similarly, Mr. Dayo Temola, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), OAUSTECH chapter, also commended the Vice-Chancellor's efforts, stating, "We appreciate the Vice-Chancellor's commitment to staff welfare. The payment of outstanding arrears and implementation of the new minimum wage is a significant step towards addressing our concerns. We look forward to continued collaboration and improvement in staff welfare." Mr. Kunle Akinwonmi, Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), OAUSTECH branch, also expressed his appreciation, stating, "We are grateful to the Vice-Chancellor for implementing the new minimum wage and paying outstanding arrears. This will go a long way in improving the welfare of our members."

Furthermore, Mr. Davies Bobola, Chairman of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), OAUSTECH branch, commended the Vice-Chancellor's efforts, saying, "We appreciate the Vice-Chancellor's commitment to staff welfare. The implementation of the new minimum wage and payment of outstanding arrears is a significant step towards addressing our concerns. We look forward to continued collaboration and improvement in staff welfare." The university's staff had embarked on a protest last year, demanding the implementation of the minimum wage award, payment of outstanding arrears, and an increase in the monthly subvention to the university. The Vice-Chancellor's decision to implement the new minimum wage and pay the outstanding arrears demonstrates his commitment to addressing staff concerns. With improved staff morale and welfare, OAUSTECH is poised to achieve greater heights in its academic and research pursuits.
