SSANU Assures OAUSTECH VC of Support, Tasks Members on Professionalism

    • September 09, 2024

The National Vice-President and Chairman, Western Zone, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Dr. Abdussobur Olayiwola Salaam, has commended the Vice-Chancellor, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Prof. Temi Ologunorisa, for rapidly developing the university since assuming office over two years ago.

Dr. Salaam gave the assurance while making remarks at the Association’s 74th Regular Statutory Meeting of Zonal Executive Council (ZEC), Western Zone held at the institution on Thursday, 15 August, 2024.

He saluted the OAUSTECH’s helmsman for being progressive, open-minded and transparent in administering the university, urging him to sustain the tempo so as to continue to enjoy the cooperation of SSANU and other sister unions in the institution, insisting that meaningful progress can be attained only in an atmosphere of peace.

"Mr. Vice-Chancellor, sir, we will continue to work and cooperate with you and your management team provided you remain open and do not change. SSANU is not a union known for belligerence. We are not antagonistic. We believe in constructive engagement, dialogue and collective bargaining. By virtue of our training as managers and administrators, we understand the fact that we cannot get all and we cannot win all and because of that we are ready to give some, take some and lose some. We don’t believe in winner takes all," Comr. Salaam asserted.

He charged SSANU members to always uphold professional work ethics, integrity, punctuality and sense of responsibility.

He urged them to be responsible staff, remain conscientious, committed to duty, mission and vision of their universities and think of what they can give to the system, stressing that only in doing so would they be able to assert themselves as a body when the need arises.

SSANU leader similarly urged state governments to address the challenges of funding currently facing most state-owned universities in the country and always ensure that managements' powers are not infringed.

He also called for cooperation of state governments with SSANU in their various institutions for peace and productivity.

In his welcome address, the SSANU Chairman, OAUSTECH branch, Comr. Dayo Temola, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor with his management team for purposeful leadership and prioritizing the welfare of staff of the university.

Temola also thanked SSANU leadership at the national and zonal level for their unwavering support, adding that the association had greatly impacted the development of the university in the past seven years.

“We will continue to agitate for the improvement of staff welfare and introduction of welfare scheme that cater for sundry needs, while articulating representation of members at different fora among others.”

Comr. Temola assured that the union would continue to entreat the governing council and management of the institution to attend to her other needs such as the speedy passage of the reviewed university condition of service and scheme of service.

The other staff unions, Association of Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), in the institution applauded SSANU for its constructive engagements with management and cordial relationships with its sister unions in their goodwill messages.

ASUU chairman, Dr. Rotimi Olorunsola, represented by Dr. Paul Owombo, commended SSANU for her doggedness and responsiveness, while NASU chairman, Mr. Kunle Akinwonmi saluted SSANU leadership in the University for its dedication, resilience, inspiration and indomitability.

On the other hand, NAAT chairman, Comr. Davies Bamigbola submitted that the roles of SSANU in OAUSTECH project could not be overemphasized, hinting that other sister unions look forward to a more robust relationship and progressive unionism with SSANU.
The event was graced by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. David Aworinde, and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Union Matters, Comr. Engr. Taye Bola, who was represented by Comr. Oseni Jimoh, apart from delegates from public universities in the southwest.
