    Department of Economics

    Brief History of the Department

    The Department of Economics was established on September 6, 2024, following the approval of the School of Management Sciences for academic operations by the National Universities Commission (NUC). This establishment reflects a commitment to addressing a variety of educational, research, and societal objectives, particularly those related to the understanding, analysis, and influence of economic systems.

    The Department of Economics is dedicated to achieving the following goals:

    • Understanding Economic Systems: Providing students with a comprehensive understanding of how economic systems operate and interact.

    Brief History of the Department

    The Department of Business Management was established on October 6, 2022, following the approval of the School of Management Sciences for academic operations by the National Universities Commission (NUC). This establishment marked a significant step in enhancing the academic offerings at Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa.

    In its inaugural academic session, the department admitted 11 pioneer students for the 2022/2023 academic year, who were formally matriculated on May 25, 2023. The Department of Business Management was created with the mandate to train and produce professionals capable of making a positive impact in various sectors and organizations.

    The quality of teaching within the Department of Business Management is consistently rated as excellent, with course modules designed to develop students' skills and prepare them for a lifetime of professionalism in the business field. The department is committed to fostering an educational environment that emphasizes practical knowledge and ethical practices, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to meet the challenges of the modern business landscape.

    B.Sc. Business Management

    The Department of Business Management premises its philosophy in the training of students for positions of responsibility in the field of Business. The B.Sc. Business Management programme of OAUSTECH seeks to produce Business Managers with core competences in the various professional areas within the Business Management field. The degree in Business Management is four-year programme for UTME candidates and three-year for direct entry candidates.  The programme provides graduates with a broad-based knowledge in preparation for a successful career in a variety of occupations as outlined in the philosophy and objectives. It is also to acquaint students with solid academic competencies for higher degrees (M.Sc., Ph.D), if so desired.

    The department has the philosophy of producing graduates that are relevant to the need of the economy and can develop on their own enterprises that are sustainable and adaptable to the changes in economic demand of the country. This makes the department to develop programmes that have the necessary capacity to enhance self- reliance in students and stimulate their interest towards business management

    It is the desire of the department that graduates from the department will imbibe self- discipline, integrity and competency. The department aims to be a model in the field of business management and entrepreneurship in Nigeria.

     

    Programme Objectives

    Graduates of this programme shall be distinguished by their professional excellence, integrity and entrepreneurial culture. Specifically, the programme will:

    • Produce students who can compete favourably in the international labour market;
    • Train and equip graduates who will become captains of industry and commerce and international affairs analysts, including lobbyists who would see Africa and the whole world as the market place;
    • Prepare students to be equipped for roles in advanced teaching and research.
    • Develop students in leadership and interpersonal relation skills that are essential for working effectively in organisations.
    • Provide basic knowledge and skills needed for the understanding and analysis of problems related to the management and administration of industrial, commercial, public, and other organisations;
    • Equip students with knowledge and skills of decision making, especially the analytical skills needed for recognising, defining and solving problems; and
    • Develop in student’s leadership and interpersonal relations skills in management.

     

    Learning Outcomes

    The learning objectives and outcomes are designed to provide students with capacity for critical thinking, technical knowledge, communication, teamwork, ethics and social responsibility, entrepreneurial skills, and use of technology.

    On successful completion of this programme, the student will be able to:

    ADMMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    a) UTME

    Candidate seeking admission into the Business Management programme must possess at least minimum of credit passes in five ‘O’ level subjects at not more than two (2) sittings including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects from Commerce, Accounts, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture , Geography, Government, Yoruba, Business Management, Business Studies, Civic Education, Computer Studies, History, Insurance, Marketing, Office Practice, Tourism, Yoruba at  WAEC, GCE, NECO or NABTEB.

    UTME Subjects: The U.T.M.E subjects are English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any one of the subjects listed in O’ Level requirements.

    b) Direct Entry

    1. Holders of ND/HND Certificate in relevant areas of Management Sciences with a minimum of Upper credit for ND and Lower Credit for HND.

    2. GCE (A/L), JUPEB, IJMB passes or its equivalent in two subjects Economics and any one of Mathematics, Statistics, Biology, Geography, Agricultural Science, Accounting and Business Management.

    The Department of Entrepreneurship premises its philosophy in the training of students for positions of responsibility in the field of Entrepreneurship. The B.Sc. Entrepreneurship Management programme of OAUSTECH seeks to produce Entrepreneurship professionals with core competences in the various Professional areas within the Entrepreneurship field, who are adequately prepared to discharge their duties professionally, with a high level of integrity and diligence.     • Develop students in leadership and interpersonal relation skills that are essential for working effectively in organizations.
    • produce graduates with sound academic and professional skills that can compete favourably with other Entrepreneurship graduates in any other parts of the world; and
    • Consolidate and expand the frontiers of knowledge in Entrepreneurship through development of teaching materials, research, and publications.

    About OAUSTECH

    Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa was established by the Ondo State government in 2008. It was initially named as Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH).

    It is a technology-based institution, which aims at providing the needed manpower training for industrial and technological development of Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole.
