    OAUSTECH Economics programme is to produce graduates equipped with critical skills and abilities to use simplified models to identify the essence of a problem, analyse and reason deductively and inductively; assimilate structure and analyse data qualitatively and quantitatively; pass across to a wide audience the result of the analysed data; think critically and draw economic policy inferences and to recognize the potential constraints in their implementation. The B.Sc. Degree programme in Economics will also offer greater assistance to students in the area of developing necessary competence, sufficient to secure jobs in academia, corporate firms, multinationals, government, international agencies (e.g. World Bank, IMF etc), Financial Institutions including Central Bank, research and development institutes, petroleum and energy sector, as well as self-employment, among others.

     

    Programme Objectives

    The major objectives of the programme are to:

    a) Provide training in the principles of economics and their application appropriate to the B.Sc. Economics programme.

    b) Stimulate students intellectually through the study of economics and to lead them to appreciate its application in solving problems.

    c) Provide a firm foundation of knowledge about the workings of an economy and to develop the relevant skills for the constructive use of that knowledge in a range of settings.

          d) Develop in students the ability to apply the analytical tools, knowledge and skills acquired          to the solution of societies' economic problems and policy.

     e) Develop in students, through the study of economics, a range of transferable skills that will   be of value in employment and self-employment.

     f) Provide students with the knowledge and skill base ,from which they can proceed to further studies in Economics, related areas, or in inter-disciplinary areas that involve Economics; and

     g) Promote technological advancement through the application of economic principles in the   management of the teeming and unutilized natural and productive resources of the country.

     

    Learning Outcomes  

    Upon completing an Economics program, students should demonstrate the following competencies:

    • Comprehensive Understanding of Economic Theory: Explain core economic principles, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international economics, and apply these theories to real-world situations. Distinguish between various economic models, such as market structures, fiscal and monetary policy models, and growth theories, to analyze economic behaviors and outcomes.
    • Quantitative and Analytical Skills: Use mathematical, statistical, and econometric tools to analyze and interpret economic data, identifying patterns and relationships within datasets. Apply quantitative methods to measure economic indicators, evaluate trends, and conduct rigorous economic research.
    • Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Abilities: Assess complex economic issues, critically analyze arguments, and use evidence-based reasoning to draw conclusions and make recommendations. Identify and evaluate alternative solutions to economic challenges, weighing trade-offs and potential impacts on different sectors of the economy.
    • Policy Analysis and Evaluation Skills: Analyze public policies from an economic perspective, assessing their effectiveness, efficiency, and equity, and propose improvements based on empirical evidence. Evaluate the economic implications of public policy on issues such as taxation, welfare, healthcare, and environmental regulation, considering both short- and long-term impacts.
    • Understanding of Global and Societal Issues: Demonstrate knowledge of how global economic forces impact domestic economies, including trade, globalization, economic development, and international finance. Analyze socioeconomic issues such as poverty, inequality, unemployment, and sustainable development, and propose economic solutions that address these challenges.
    • Research Skills in Economics: Design and conduct economic research using appropriate methodologies, collecting and analyzing data to answer economic questions and test hypotheses. Prepare research reports and papers that effectively communicate findings, methods, and conclusions to both specialized and general audiences.
    • Application of Economics to Business and Finance: Apply economic principles in business contexts, analyzing issues such as consumer behavior, pricing, investment decisions, and market competition. Understand the role of financial markets and institutions, interpreting financial data to inform economic decisions in both public and private sectors.
    • Ethics and Social Responsibility in Economic Practice: Recognize ethical issues in economic decisions and policies, promoting social responsibility and considering the impact of economic actions on different communities and environments. Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical implications of economic analysis and policy recommendations, including potential biases and conflicts of interest.
    • Effective Communication and Presentation Skills: Communicate economic concepts, findings, and policy recommendations clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, including policymakers, businesses, and the general public. Develop written, visual, and oral communication skills to effectively present data, analyses, and economic arguments in a professional and accessible manner.
    • Adaptability to Economic Changes and Trends: Show the ability to adapt knowledge and skills to address emerging economic issues, such as technological disruptions, climate change, and shifting global trade dynamics. Stay informed about new research, trends, and tools in economics to continuously update skills and knowledge relevant to evolving economic landscapes.

    These learning outcomes aim to prepare graduates of Economics programs to be analytical thinkers, effective communicators, and socially responsible professionals capable of addressing complex economic issues in various sectors.

     

    ADMMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    a) UTME

    Candidate seeking admission into the Economics programme must possess at least minimum of credit passes in five ‘O’ level subjects at not more than two (2) sittings including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any two from Government, Geography, Civil Education, Financial Accounting, Accounting, Commerce, History, Business Studies, Business Management, Tourism, Yoruba Language, Computer Studies, Insurance, Marketing, Tourism, Christian Religious Knowledge/Islamic Religious Studies, Literature in English, at WAEC, GCE, NECO or NABTEB.

    UTME Subjects: The U.T.M.E subjects are English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any one listed in ‘O’ Level requirements.

    About OAUSTECH

    Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa was established by the Ondo State government in 2008. It was initially named as Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUSTECH).

    It is a technology-based institution, which aims at providing the needed manpower training for industrial and technological development of Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole.
